Air Quality Watch Issued for Santa Barbara County –
Particularly Northern Area of County

Smoke from La Brea Fire Could Affect Air Qualiy

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department and the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District today issued an Air Quality Watch for Santa Barbara County, with particular attention to the northern areas of the county. Smoke from the La Brea Fire currently burning in the Los Padres National Forest could affect county air quality. This is considered only an Air Quality Watch at this time; changing weather and fire conditions will determine whether areas of the county are affected.

Smoke may be visible in areas of the county even when ground-level air quality is not affected. If you smell smoke in the air where you are, be cautious and use common sense to protect your family’s health. Everyone, especially people with heart or lung disease (including asthma), older adults, and children, should limit time spent outdoors, and avoid outdoor exercise when smoke is in the area. If you have symptoms of lung or heart disease that may be related to exposure to smoke and particles, including repeated coughing, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, wheezing, chest tightness or pain, palpitations, nausea or unusual fatigue or lightheadedness, contact your health care provider.

This Air Quality Watch will be updated on August 11, or as conditions warrant.
