Regional Forum to Address Future Growth
Convenes in Buellton

Santa Barbara County Association of Governments
and the Air Pollution Control District Present "Building Stronger Communities"

Santa Barbara, CA – A conference to exchange ideas and information on accommodating future growth will be held on Thursday, November 7 at the Rancho Santa Barbara Marriott in Buellton.

The day-long event begins at 8:30 a.m., bringing together planning professionals, public and private developers and elected officials from across the state to discuss land use, air quality, jobs/housing balance, transportation and downtown revitalization.

"The linkage between air quality and land use planning is complex and provocative," says Doug Allard, Air Pollution Control Officer. "This forum will provide a great opportunity for the community at large to hear about the successes and failures in other regions and express their ideas for our future growth." The forum will include several presentations, panel discussions, and question and answer sessions.

"Building Stronger Communities" will kick off with welcomes from Doug Allard; Jim Kemp, Executive Director of Santa Barbara County Association of Governments; Buellton Mayor Russ Hicks; and DeWayne Homdahl, Chair of the APCD Board of Directors. Ron Sims, Executive for King County, Washington, will be the keynote speaker and present a lively recap of the Seattle story. Bill Watkins from the UCSB Economic Forecast Project will outline growth trends for Santa Barbara County and will be followed by sessions focusing on: Challenges and Issues, Case Histories/Best Practices, Overcoming Obstacles. John Patton, former director of County Planning and development will provide closing remarks.
