$800 for Car or Pickup 1992 and Older

Need Ready Cash? Stuff Your Wallet and Clean the Air
Successful Old Car Buy Back Program Extended to Model Year 1992

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — For consumers looking for extra cash, Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District has a solution: sell that old car or pickup truck for $800.  The District announced today that its successful Old Car Buy Back Program, which has purchased some 800 vehicles of model year 1988 or older over the past two years, has been extended to vehicles of model year 1992 and older, making more than 30,000 additional vehicles potentially eligible for the program.

“In addition to picking up some extra cash, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you’re helping clean the air and green the planet,” said District Public Information Officer Bobbie Bratz. Cars and trucks are the major source of smog pollution in Santa Barbara County, and older vehicles pollute the air much more than newer ones. The District estimates the program has cut some 35 tons of smog-forming pollution since the spring of 2006. The idea is to take these older vehicles off the road permanently; a licensed auto dismantler crushes cars and trucks that are voluntarily retired under the program.  The program is funded by vehicle registration fees designated for use by local air districts to reduce air pollution.

The District will pay $800 for 1992 and older gasoline-powered cars, light-duty trucks, or vans if certain conditions are met. Vehicles must have been registered to a Santa Barbara County address for the past two consecutive years, must be in working condition, and must meet additional requirements as listed on the District website.
