Watching Out for ‘Tailpipe Hype’
SANTA BARBARA, CA —Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (APCD)
today announced an outreach effort to help consumers buy vehicles that produce
less smog pollution, and less of the pollution that contributes to global
climate change.
As dealers begin to display 2006 models on vehicle lots, the agency is
distributing materials that show buyers how to read the Smog Index sticker on
the vehicle window, and that point out that vehicles that are more fuel
efficient not only save buyers money on gasoline, but also produce less of the
pollution that contributes to global climate change.
The effort warns consumers to watch out for ‘tailpipe hype,’ noting that air
pollution ratings and standards are different for Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs)
and trucks, and that, while some hybrid vehicles offer significant clean-air and
fuel-efficiency benefits, some gas-only vehicles can offer benefits in these
areas as well.
The agency encourages buyers to visit
www.OurAir.org or to call 961-8800 for more information, and to receive the
free postcard “Guide to a Clean-Air Ride.”
