Air Quality Engineer I/II

The Position

As an air quality engineer, you will gain valuable experience and become familiar with a variety of equipment and processes in the air pollution control field.  You will learn to evaluate and issue permits to local air pollution sources, calculate air pollutant emissions, and analyze air pollution control equipment and processes.  You will also be trained in toxic risk analysis and assessment as well as emission source testing, rule analysis, and geographical information systems.

The Air Quality Engineer I is the entry-level class of the series.  Incumbents work under immediate supervision while performing the less complex office and professional engineering work and routine assignments of the unit.

The Air Quality Engineer II is the fully experienced, journey level class of the series which requires performance of more difficult tasks requiring a working knowledge of engineering principles, practices and equipment used in air quality analysis and control. 

The Ideal Candidate:

Will possess knowledge of engineering principles and practices used in air pollution analysis and control, including physics, chemistry, mathematics, elementary thermodynamics, natural sciences, and meteorology as related to air quality management/air pollution control; research methods, methods of statistical analysis, principles and methods of measuring atmospheric conditions and pollution levels as well as chemical and physical characteristics of air impurities and their interactions with the environment; engineering calculations and statistical methods; AND will be skilled in communicating effectively orally and in writing; planning, directing, organizing, carrying out, and/or evaluating comprehensive engineering studies and analyses; preparing clear, complete, and technically accurate reports; performing mathematical and statistical analyses; interpreting, explaining, and enforcing regulations and policies; developing recommendations based on findings, and reaching sound and defensible conclusions.

Qualifications

AQE I: BS degree with a major in chemical, petroleum, environmental or mechanical engineering.

AQE II: Same as AQE I and at least two years of professional experience in the investigation and/or enforcement of air pollution control regulations or in the design of either mechanical equipment or chemical processes used in air pollution control.  A Masters degree in any of the required disciplines may be substituted for one year of experience.

Other Requirements

Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

Candidates’ rank on the eligibility list will be determined by scores obtained on the written exam.  Qualified applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that will remain in effect three months from the date the list is established.
