“NREL welcomes the
contributions of Santa Barbara APCD’s projects to the field of clean fuels. The projects generate valuable
information on clean technologies that will help bring alternative fuels into the marketplace on a commercially viable basis.”

The Clean Air Express project marks the first time the dual-fuel technology has ever been used in a highway bus application.
The Nation's First Dual-Fuel Commuter Bus |
|
| In January of 1998, four new dual-fuel buses
began operation in the ITG-sponsored Clean Air Express bus service. The engines run
simultaneously on compressed natural gas with supplemental diesel fuel, reducing NOx emissions by
up to 50 percent.
ITG initiated the commuter bus program in 1991 to reduce pollution from commuters driving 30-60 miles to work in Santa Barbara or Goleta. Today, nine Clean Air Express buses transport more than 325 commuters to work daily.

“In partnership with ITG, the California Energy Commission and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory cofunded the first nation-wide demonstration of dual-fuel, CAT C10 engines in the Clean Air Express commuter buses. Information we have gained through the 114,000 miles traveled by these buses
to date has been critical to improving the application of the dual-fuel technology -- Jananne Sharpless |
